Caning and Rushing of Furniture
Caning and rushing are traditional techniques used to restore and enhance the seats and backs of chairs. This adds both beauty and durability. Both techniques require skilled craftsmanship and attention to detail to achieve a flawless finish. When repairing a well-loved chair, professional caning and rushing bring new life to the piece while preserving its traditional character.

Re-caning of antique furniture
We work with a qualified caner who can re-cane and re-rush chairs and other items of furniture using traditional materials. We can match existing cane work for an authentic finish. Caning involves weaving thin strips of rattan or other natural materials to create an intricate pattern, often found in antique and vintage chairs. This method provides strength and flexibility, making the seat comfortable and long-lasting. Rushing, on the other hand, uses twisted fibers such as cattail leaves, paper fiber or seagrass to create a handwoven seat.
This Louis XV chair pictured on the left came to us in a parlous condition. To restore it, we re-glued the joints in the frame, re-polished the wood and fitted a new cane seat and back. The result is a beautifully restored chair that will last for years to come.
